Long before the twelve zodiac signs reached India, her seers divided the sky along the Moon's own path — twenty-seven mansions of roughly 13°20′ each, the Nakshatras. From Ashwini to Revati, the Moon crosses one mansion each day, and the mansion rising at birth was held to imprint the native's deepest instincts.
